Not gonna lie, this story threw me for a loop. Sub with poor luck in Doms gets a suggestion from a trusted Dom about a Dom in another state who is look for a sub "like him". So they apparently "talk" and he moves out to this guys ranch...........but when he gets there its apparent they didn't talk about anything important.........like..........the subs job(apparently the Dom just decided his city boy sub who is a published writer is somehow going to be a ranch hand.......because he is "helpful")...........or what they expect out of the relationship(they literally don't talk about what the Dom expects from his sub until after he packs up everything he owns and moves halfway across the united states). The fact that the author tries to display safe BDSM practices(contract, safeword, supportive and informative BDSM community) then goes on to throw her MC into a situation that throws all the red flags(Isolation from your life, vagueness about what is expected of you, moving great distances, general isolation on a ranch, oh and the kicker, the dom wants to keep the relationship(the whole relationship) on the down low) jerked me out of the story and I could not get back into it. Its not a bad book if your looking for decent BDSM sex scenes but if your looking for a nice plot to go with it this is not the book.Product details

Mastering the Ride edition by JP Barnaby Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This story was beautiful! I really really wish it was a full book, I was totally not ready for it to end! I forgot it was a novella until I realized I was already at 90% '( I loved Josh and Wade, they were so perfect together.
In my opinion the best authors allow you to understand the characters by having them do or say things for which you can get a crystal clear mental picture established. J.P. Barnaby has done this for me so far in this book. Here is an example Josh (the sub) is an author. Instead of overly describing this Barnaby has the character take his laptop and go sit on his couch - the leather couch he purchased with the royalties of his first novel - a symbol of his success as an author. That tells me MUCH more than just a line saying "he was a successful author". This type of thing happened repeatedly in the story.
I really enjoyed this little book. There is the usual rush rush and a bit of insta love (for which I subtracted a star)- but it made me smile and the communication was great. I'd love it if there was a sequel!
What enticed me to read this novel is to discover why an apparently accomplished young man wanted to be a perfect submissive.
Josh is young, sweet and with a gentle nature. He is also a published author, successful enough to be able to live in a nice Chicago condo and not having to abide to a 9 to 5 o'clock job. Despite this, Josh is craving, literally craving, for a Master; he has even underwent a formal training, but at today he is still without a contract. Usually at the end of the trial period his prospective Masters don't formalize the contract and Josh is always more discouraged, until the day his trainer, Nicholas, proposes him to move to Montana for a trial contract with his business partner Wade.
On the other side we learn Wade's story; from a wealthy family and with a planned life path in front of him, Wade left everything to move to Montana. I think he has not really the core of a true Dominant, he simply wants back the independence he left behind when he decided to agree to his parents's project life for him. Being a Dominant is for Wade regaining that independence.
Josh and Wade click together since, for me, they are not ordinary sub and Dom. A real dominant would have kicked out Josh that first day, when he started to behave badly; a real sub would have never, ever considered to be so disrespected of his Dom's house and rules. To me? I don't care if they are not true sub and Dom, what I like of them is the gentle manners of both, the fact they really need sweetness more than passion; if passion comes along fine, but first of all they need to feel loved and cherished.
I enjoyed this story but it was far too short. I wanted to know more about both Josh and Wade. They are interesting characters, worthy of being fully developed.
Wish there was more but I think a lot of people underestimate the power of a short story.
after a lifetime of searching, Josh and wade finally find their perfect fit. short and sweet, this was a very romantic story, which was not what I expected. I would love to read more of these two.
It's definitely a (sadly rare) pleasure reading a short novella that feels complete. As I've ranted on about before, so many of these stories, which would be under 100 pages if printed and are so popular in ebooks these days, seem incomplete, with under-developed characters or plots that really demanded a much longer work. While "Mastering the Ride" definitely leaves you wanting to know more about how the relationship between Josh and Wade develops, especially how Josh manages to fit in, that's only because the story does such a good job of getting you involved in their lives.
The author spends half the book introducing us to Josh and Wade separately. We learn about Josh's many disappointments and the kind of master he fantasizes about. We also get to witness Wade's epiphany, when he realizes both that he's gay and a Dom. By the time the two men meet, you're almost certainly rooting for both of them.
This is the first book by J.P. Barnaby - an author who has been on my `must read' list forever - that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last. She mentioned that a sequel to this book is in the works, and so I'm looking forward to it.
